Beyerdynamic T1: Light on The Head, Heavy on Pleasure

 

It was a tough session listening to the T1s after a delightful session with the Audeze.... I was not sure what headphones can actually match the SQ from the Audeze. I received the demo unit courtesy of CMY One Utama arranged by the good man Steve Chua a few days before Hari Raya. So, I had good time to really listen to these cans.

BUILT

As oppose to Audeze, the T1s came in a metal casing with soft foam like material internally to house the cans.AT this price point, there is little to complain about the built. A mix of metal and fabric cushion on the cans itself and leather on the headband. An odd combination to me as it could also be more economical to just stick to one material or the most two. I do prefer the fabric cushion on the pads rather than leather given that I live in a humid country. Its OK to use leather if the pads are interchangeable as BOSE's headphones are. But if its  permanent fixture, I rather go for fabric. It would be even better if the headband was of fabric as well.

The headband can be adjusted easily and it gave me the right amount of pressure to keep the cans in place over my head. Not inducing any uncomfortable experience.

The unit comes with a double sided cable with a 1/4" jack..Sturdily built to precision tightly into the cans. No wiggly cables. But unfortunately, the cable cannot be easily replaced or changed to an XLR connection unless you start doing major modifications internally.

The ear cups of the T1 is made from soft fabric and the pads are soft and gentle on the ears as well. Very comfortable.

It is also lighter then the LCD2 which is a bonus for me. I can use this cans straight for 2 to 3 hours without resting back onto my sofa.

Highlighted in bold above is the impedance of 600 ohm. Now, this unit really needs an amp to justify the SQ. However, I tried connecting to it to my iPhone 5 using an adaptor.... and the result was...actually not too bad.. it does not really deliver the T1s true potential, but if you would like to have a RM5000 headphones out and about connected to your phone while you jog, by all means, it can still be driven by iPhone.

THE SET UP

Source 1:

• MF M1 CDT to M6 DAC to M6i amplifier to Bryston BHA-1 headphone using all Siltech interconnects. All balanced except from M6i to Bryston headphone amp using single ended RCA interconnect.

Source 2:

• Clearaudio Concept turntable to MF M1 ViNL phono stage to Bryston headphone amp via its Balanced input using VDH XLR cables.

THE SESSION

I used the same track listing similar to when I demo-ed the LCD2.

For Andrea's track, the T1 presentation was very bold but maintains the airiness that I like from my MS Pro. I guess it being a semi open design, it was capable to provide that extra low end notes compared to my MS Pro but still maintain the subtle dispersion of music that creates that liveliness in the tracks. Vocals was presented in clarity and very melodious..

My Hero however was a little bit of disappointment. The kick drum did not come out as per my usual expectation from this track. A bit weak and did not bring up the adrenalin which I usually get from this track. The grungy guitar sound of Grohl is however very evident and the T1 maintains the clarity of his vocals even with all his growling. It was still entertaining but something was missing which I think was that extrat bass notes from the kick drums. 

To further test the low end notes, Until it Sleeps by Metallica was in line next. The T1 gave a better performance with this track. Lars's kick drums was detailed, bold and solid. I LIKE. His hand works on the snare was also very detailed and relatively similar to LCD2.

The best performance of this T1 came from Zee Avi's track. It was PERFECT headfi moment for me. The T1 presented the track in all its glory. Musically balanced between the low, mids and highs. Vocals was heavy with passion, ukulele strings was detailed and airy, the double bass was hitting the right vibration notes.

Patience was a track that brought back lots of memories from school. This was one of those GNR tracks that melts the hearts of the girls in my school. I had to pick up my Ibanez Semi Acoustic guitar and played along.... but of course... stopped half way through the song as I have forgotten the chords. But nevertheless, with the T1, it gave me that music passion from Axl's voice.

Unforgettable from George Benson sums up the performance of this T1. It was indeed another unforgettable experience listening to these T1s. This track alone is already a strong track to begin with eventhough its an old melody. The T1 presented this track  in a very emotional but strong experience especially from the violins playing. 

VERDICT

A must have for those who wants that little extra bass especially for those coming from open back headphones. It does not deliver as much bass as the LCD2 but it all depends on what you prefer. The mids and treble are balanced out with the subtlety of the bass.

I burn in the demo unit for more than 150 hours and the sound quality just got even better. Beyond that however, seems to be plateaued.

It suits well with Bryston BHA-1 amp using single end 1/4" jack.

Fortunately for me, the weight issue I had with LCD2, the T1 gave me the perfect comfort. So, its the T1 that is residing permanently in my audio den.

There are various hifi shops selling Beyerdynamic product besides CMY. But not sure which shop have an open demo unit for customer to try it out in the shop at least.

A Rest From Reality

It was  a much needed break for me and my family after a very physically and mentally exhausting year thus far. Had the time to spend about an hour to visit this famous LP store in Paris. A true Madonna fan but still I managed to to get a few gems from this shop.

And now back in KL...listening to these LPs through my T1s.

Sweet Luscious Audez'e LCD2

So, a blissful few days of having the Audez'e with me came to an end. It was indeed a very good pair of cans to start with. My quest for listening to a pair of 'balanced' headphone, driven my Bryston BHA-1 amp was indeed fruitful. I am fully convinced that whenever its possible to use a balanced connection, I should use it. Similar to my main hifi set up which is fully balanced from source to DAC to amp.

Now, the 5 mins audition I had during the KLIAV show this year, prompted me to seriously audition this unit at home. A few weeks after the KLIAV show, Mr. Aaron from David & Associates called me up to see whether I was still interested in the unit. For me to part with RM4300, I really had to make sure that the unit suits me well in all aspects of head-fi. So, he offered to loan me the unit for a few days which I am truly grateful of his trust to leave the demo unit with for a few days.

BUILT

The built definitely reflects the selling price. Sturdy, refined in details, flawless.  Compared to my Alessandro Grado MS Pro, its like comparing a Mercedes with a Toyota. The leather quality on the LCD2 is soft and very comfortable to the skin. The unit I was given was a lambskin unit. They also have an option for leather-free super suede microfiber fabric.

The headband though thin compared to the cans itself provides adequate stretchable width to go over my big head as shown in the picture above. (YES, Ultraman is the best ever superhero).

The unit comes with a flat cable with a 1/4" jack on one side and a pair of 4 pins mini XLR connection on the other side to connect to each can. The locking mechanism comes with a small soft button to slot into each can. Sturdily built to precision as the cable locks in tightly into the cans. No wiggly cables.

The ear cups of the LCD2 are made from Caribbean Rosewood. They also have a unit made of Bamboo composite which is retailed at RM3800. 

As I opted to listen to a fully balanced cable, Mr. Aaron also provided me with a pure silver 4 pins XLR cable from ALOAudio.

THE SESSION

I listened to the following tracks for this demo.

If my fellow blog followers can notice, I am not using my usual test tracks except for My Hero and Siboh Kitak Nangis. Reason being is that I would like to avoid being over critical finding that level of details in the common tracks I use. I would prefer just to get the honest presentation from the LCD2 based on any music thrown on it.

The first track by Andrea Bocelli is also a strong track with a forcefull orchestra arrangement. The  LCD2 did not dissapoint me at all as the presentation was very bold but lively. Although it is an open back design, it provided a more controlled low end notes compared to my MS Pro. Vocals on this track was also very upfront.

Comes in My Hero, the kick drums from this track is very well defined but still  maintains the clarity that I enjoy from MS Pro. Cant believe that this is an open back design. The grungy guitar of Grohl, was very evident and his vocal was at its best growling sound. Using the MS Pro, these aspect of the track was more dispersed rather than centralised.

Just to test more on the low end notes, I put on Metallica - Until It Sleeps and of course in the spirit of their maiden concert in Malaysia soon. Again, Lars's kick drums and also his hand works on the snare were truly exceptional through these cans. The kick drums were controlled, defined and the snare was very detailed as you can even here the back beat of the sticks on the snare.

Forget drums for awhile as I wanted to hear string works. What is better than the sound of ukelele? Zee Avi's track in her native language was another track that was well presented through the LCD2. However, as I am used to this song being presented in a more open and airy presentation, it sounded a bit closed up. Not in a bad way but its different from what I am used to.

Patience was played from a second hand LP I purchased during KLIAV show. Spinned it and  as Axl Rose  screeching his voice, the LCD2 just continue to deliver a well balanced tone throughout the song. It managed to convince me that the LP benefit a lot from the unit performance.

Last but not least, George Benson tribute to Nat King Cole. Unforgettable.... The word sums it all out... An unforgettable experience with very fine cans. This is a brand new LP I purchased where practically the produced sound matches well with the headphone amp.

The only issue is that, playing an old record , the crack n pops are very clear. But the melodious sound coming out from these cans is truly precise.

VERDICT

A must have for those who really appreciate defined and controlled bass which also comes with a midrange and treble balance.

 

It suits well Bryston BHA-1 amp using both single end 1/4" jack and 4 pin XLR. 

Unfortunately for me, the weight of the unit does not provide comfort to me. I have tried and hope that there is a way to get use to it but after 3 days with me, I still find that the unit is pretty heavy. My quest for a high end headphones continues.

A Cleaning Gift

Referring to the post a few weeks back regarding a gift I received from a dear friend and mentor... I have unveiled it this morning after a session of the RM12 The Fugees LP... Which have a little bit of crackle sound... So the gift is actually the Amari RW-200 record cleaning machine.

Superb...excellent...I should have bought an RCM many moons ago....

A little bit about the unit.

BUILT

Heavy and very sturdy. Weighs about 11 KG... as heavy as decent hifi kit.

It came with a solid power cable too but unfortunately...it came with a european plug so had to use an adaptor.

The on and off switches for the rotating platter and vacuum is very industrial and solid. kind of old school.

The clamp is also heavy and solid with a brass 'lock' in it. This is actually one feature that I think needs to be improved.

This brass slot locks into the platter pin by means of friction ie: there is no thread to screw this clamp onto the pin. You still needs to turn it counter clock wise while pushing it in. And after about 6 sides LP wash, the pin became hot and might have expanded a bit. It was then almost impossible to push this clamp in for my 7th wash.

And also I have a concern that this brass part will wear out which will then make the clamp loose.

The bottom of the clamp has a rubber lip which is quite effective in keeping the fluid out from the LP middle label while you are cleaning.

The outlet rubber hose comes with a clip to avoid the fluid dripping while you clean. You just need to unclip it after you are done and drain away the dirty fluid. 

The vacuum arm is made of plastic and easily detachable from the unit together with the spring.

FUNCTION

The motor that spins the platter is sooo quiet... And it is quite flat based on the flat-o-meter I use.

The vacuum on the other hand is as loud as the house vacuum cleaner. Really noisy it is. But it works like a charm. The LP is really dry and the clamp works well too in keeping out the fluid away from the middle label.

The cleaning is straight forward...:

1. Place the LP on the platter

2. Clamp it

3. Turn it on and let it spin.

4. Brush it gently to remove and dirt

5. Spray or apply the cleaning fluid onto the LP. (I use a spray bottle)

6. Maintain the brush perpendicular to the LP spinning

7. Turn the vacuum arm counter clockwise onto the LP and turn it on.

8. Let the vacuum suck out all the fluid from the LP.

9. Turn the unit off and inspect the LP to make sure it is as dry as possible.

RESULTS

I cleaned 2 old LPs from the 60s and 70s I think...the hit Hindi movie Bobby OST and The Sound of Music OST.

Prior to the clean, both LPs were very noisy to listen to with lots of crackle. The Sound of Music is even worst as the sound level produced is very low when played.

But after cleaning, less cracking sound can be heard and the the Sound of Music sounded louder like any other LP.

I find that for an old and very dirty LP....it will need more than 1 wash. Both LPs...I washed it twice and after the second wash gives me even better results.

And this is the fluid that came out of it.... and this is from 2 LPs that I actually already manually cleaned it before.

CONCLUSION

Definitely a must have for those with vast collection of LP. I think this unit is retailing at about RM1300. I still think its worth the money...Lucky for me that I received this as a gift.

KLIAV Show 2013 3rd Day 7th July

So....I didnt get to go on the 6th due to family commitment....However, I managed to get to the show in the last few hours on Sunday.

Main reasons to go back:

1. Re-demo Beyer's T1 before I decide between T1 and Audeze LCD2

2. Re-visit Bryston home cinema set up

3. Re-visit Maxx Audio home cinema set up

4. LP hunting again

5. Meet up with the usual lots from CMY, LTB, AV Designs, Jo Ki and also to meet new distributor faces form hifi4sale...mainly from the Conceptz Store and TEAC distributor from SIngapore.

SVS by Maxx Audio

First was Maxx's room with his full SVS set up. I still particularly like the subtle but gutsy subwoofer but my target is to set up the projector and screen first. Still, this to me was the best midrange home cinema set up. Eventhough it was a smaller room, Max brothers have managed to get that sweet spot to deliver an outstanding sound reproduction.

Bryston and JVC by AV Designs

Now, the excitement from the first listening session on Friday was not enough. I really need to experience the whole home cinema she-bang for a longer period and also with proper high quaity demo disc. So, I have to make a point to have James show me what this whole set up can really do.

Annnnddd show me he did.....It was relatively effortless for the Bryston speakers to deliver complex sound  with such detail and crispiness....with the right amount of low end reproduction. Have a look and listen at these 2 samples. The drums video.. I can even hear the wires beneath the snare vibrates and also the kick drums sounded really controlled and sharp. The dispersion of high freq notes from the ride and crash cymbals was very precise and detail plus it did not produce an ear hurting high pitch noise.

Now, I really would want to make my dream of having a projector and screen set up a reality...but the Bryston speakers just keep on calling me to test them with my MF set up. Will it replace my ProAc D18? Maybe yes...maybe no...

Beyer's T1 headphones by CMY

I would still want to fully test a balanced headphone but apart from The Abyss, both the Audeze and T1 on demo were with a 6.3 mm jack. So I tested the T1 with Audiolab MDAC with iPhone as a source, docked into Audiolab dock. I just needed 10 seconds listening through these cans and convinced that this unit might win my ears over the Audeze LCD2. Its also more comfortable compared to the Audeze and easire to maintain as it comes with fabric cushion as oppose to lamb skin leather on thr Audeze. However, have to wait for CMY to provide the price for a fully balanced unit.

LP Hunting

This was the best bargain of the show. I managed to get The Fugess LP for RM12....yes you read that right... RM12.... I also managed to get Sheena Easton...

And I am very happy to have met face to face Cheah Mun Kit... friendly, resourceful, humble. Thank you for the High Def CD.

Summary

It was a very fun event...although I did not manage to get the kit that I want this year, but got the chance to meet up with old faces and also make new friends. It was indeed on of the best shows that I have attended. Salute Mr. Dick Tan and his team for an excellent work.

KLIAV Show 2013: 1st Day 5th July

It was an agony to wait till 2 pm before I can get off work and head towards JW Marriot for the show. I dont know why but I had afeeling that this year's show will have something different and also more exciting.

I actually do have a few purchase objective this year as compared to last year. Mainly:

1. 65" TV
2. Audeze LCD-2 Headphone
3. Blu Ray and LPs

The usual shops when you enter the show are Desa Home Theatre, PCOM, Asia Sound etc...

Unfortunate for me...65" TV are still in 5 figure values...which my mind constantly think that at that price....I might as well go for projector and screen set up...

Went in to see Rega.....Elicit M caught my eye.

Then I went up to 8th floor...and the first room I went to was our local resident guru...Jo Ki...

As usual...this set up amazes me.... small speakers with big sound...

Musical Fidelity by LTB

Next door...to Jo Ki was LTB Enterprise...Apparently...I am known as Musical Fidelity technical expert in this room hahahahah. Wonder wherre I get this reputation from....NO guru I am.....just my ears are tuned towards the MF sound signature..

Just FYI...LTB have been around for 21 years in Malaysia...

On active display are the M1 SDAC (DAC pre amp) into M1 PWR power amp, driving a pair of Boston speakers, with the M1 CDT as source.

The M1 CLiC network player is hooked up into the second system.

The second set up comprises of M6 series.

All active set up....with M6 CD player feeding into the M6 DAC....into the M6i integrated amp driving a pair of Dynaudio.... and also the M1 CLiC is connected to the M6i as well...

Visitors are entertained by the witty Tony, his daughter and Shamir.

For a simple set up, the M6 sounds pretty darn good..

Annnnddd lots of items are on bundle and special price...I KID YOU NOT... some are even cheaper than when I bought them..

I must say....this is the best set up for me...monstrous set up for full Bryston system....

James and Low spared no expense to have this set up in the show....

And the Model T speakers....have shown its full potential given the bigger room compared to when I demoed it in the show room.

And I have my eyes on the Mini T and Middle T....

Both home cinema and 2 channel hifi duties....the Model T package surpass all my expectation... The soundstage and depth presented by these speakers really move my soul... People unexpectedly thought these wre other speaker brand...and have high praises on this set up.

SVS by Maxx Audio

I am not really familiar with SVS....read a lot about it...but this is the first time I get to listen to their 5.1 channel set up with full SVS speaker package and sub.... Maaaannnn it was really good..even it was palced in a small room. I am particularly interested in the subwoofer on the right...

Max was entertaining as usual...I might need him to come to my house again....and really set up the projector and screen.

Nagra

For this room....I must grant the owner to be the most informative exhibitor.

Very friendly and just explained to me that Nagra philosophy is not to keep on producing new kit...but just take the existing ones and tune it to improve the sound. Apparently, Nagra is the oldest hifi company in the world? 

The black speakers were driven by fully tubed pre amp and monoblocks. Sound was actually very warm and neutral. I LIKE.

CMY have 4 show rooms on this level and one main room on Level 4. 

The set ups at this level were Dynaudio/Jeff Rowland, Audiolab/Mission, Naim/ProAc....and... I forgot the other one.

On level 4, they have static display of various products plus headphones....and also this is where the have bargains on certain kit and also LPs.

Focal Utopia

One of the more grander 2 channel set up. I guess this was one of the room that have very high expectation especially it kicked off with a full official press conference and speeches... which me and a few other hifi friends from Analogue Fellowship accidently crashed in the press conference... Sorry Mr. Dick Tan...really didnt realize that there was a press conference.

Nevertheless...I had a chance to listen to this set up later. And it was a grand scale of things... driven by a full Mcintosh set up.

LP and Blu Ray Bargains

I managed to get 2 of The Mamas and the Papas for RM 85... and Blu Ray is on 2 for RM100 sale... I bought 8 titles...
